Shetland at War
The Scottish Shetland Islands contain many remains from both world wars. During World War II, up to 20,000 servicemen were based in Shetland to prepare for a potential German invasion . A German invasion of the islands would pose a direct threat to the British fleet in Scapa Flow, in the nearby Orkney Islands.
Coastal batteries, anti-aircraft defences and obstacles were constructed. The airfields at Sumburgh and Scatsta became bases for the Royal Air Force and the waters of Sullom Voe was a base for flying boats. The islands had two large radar stations which were part of the British Home Chain radar network.
