Waldfriedhof

Along the Western Front in France lie the remains of several German cemeteries and monuments for fallen soldiers from World War I. The cemeteries were built close to the front and were often beautifully designed. German soldiers who died early in the war often received richly decorated gravestones. As the war progressed, and the number of casualties increased, simpler crosses were used. After the war, the bodies were reburied in larger cemeteries which still exist today.

The remains of some cemeteries are hidden deep in the woods and have fallen into disrepair. They are affected by storms, forestry and vandalism. Sadly, their traces are slowly being erased.
