Montfaucon

Montfaucon-d'Argonne is a village in the Meuse department in north-eastern France. The original village was situated on a hill, named Butte de Montfaucon. During World War I, Montfaucon was occupied by the German army. The hill was strategically important because it offered a good view of the surroundings. The German army built a number of observation bunkers. Montfaucon was liberated in 1918 by the American army during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. The village was almost completely destroyed and was rebuilt at the foot of the hill.
