Hartmannswillerkopf
The Hartmannswillerkopf, also known as Hartmannsweiler Kopf or Vieil Armand (the French name) is a 956 m heigh peak in the French Vosges Mountains. During World War I, the French and German armies fought for control of the mountain. The most fierce fighting took place in 1915. Developments on the Western Front at Verdun and the Somme in 1916 caused a focus shift from the Vosges to the other battlefields. The lines at Hartmannswillerkopf remained relatively stable for the remainder of the war. The German army in particular built extensive fortifications on the summit and on the slopes of the mountain.
