The Schoonderbeek is a man made spring and stream whose water was used by two paper mills. The Schoonderbeek mill was built by Hendrik van Middagten in c. 1690 . The stream and mill were named after the nearby Schoonderbeek estate and castle. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1871 . A farm now stands on the site, dated 1872 on the facade, indicating that it was built on the foundations of the mill.
The Schoonderbeek also supplied water to the Vanenburg paper mill. This mill was built in 1661 by Hendrik van Essen, owner of the Vanenburg castle and estate. The mill was operational until c. 1850 and was demolished in 1874 .
