Saddell Abbey

The ruins of Saddell Abbey are located on the Kintyre Peninsula. The abbey was founded around 1160 by Somerled, Lord of Kintyre. After Somerled's death in 1164, his son Ragnall completed the abbey's construction. The abbey was abandoned by the late 15th century and today, little remains of the original abbey structures.

Notably, the site houses a collection of medieval carved grave slabs and effigies from the 14th to 16th centuries, depicting warriors, clerics, and intricate Celtic designs. Some carvings were probably constructed on the island of Iona and brought to the abbey, while other carvings were made by skilled stone craftsmen on site.
