The ruin of Muckross Abbey is located in Killarney National Park in County Kerry, Ireland. The abbey was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary by Donal McCarthy Mor and has a turbulent history. Over the centuries, the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The abbey continued to function until the 17th century when the Franciscans were driven out during the Cromwellian campaigns.
The abbey is renowned for its architecture, which includes a central courtyard surrounded by a cloister. This cloister is particularly well-preserved and is famed for its arches and a large yew tree that stands at its center, which is believed to be as old as the abbey itself.
