Slope of the Lingekopf

The Battle of the Lingekopf began on 20 July 1915 and lasted until 15 October 1915. This battle is part of a series of fighting in the Vosges triggered by the French Army to obtain dominant positions for a future attack in the plain of Alsace. These battles, and in particular the Battle of the Lingekopf, are particularly deadly for minimal territorial gains. The Germnan army had settled on the Lingekopf in 1915 and had fortified the summit. The French offensive to conquer the summit was launched on 20 July 1915 but was a failure. The French attacks continued over the following days, resulting in little progress and huge losses. Attacks and counter-attacks continued until October 1915, after which the Linge front became relatively quiet until the end of the war.
