Kootwijkerveen is a raised bog located in the middle of the dry, sandy soils of the Veluwe. Originally, Kootwijkerveen was a marshland on the slope of a historic terminal moraine at 40 meters above NAP (Amsterdam Ordnance Datum). Due to this slope, rainwater seeps downwards, eventually ending up in the lake at Kootwijkerveen. The lake's bed is impermeable, causing the water to remain and creating an ideal setting for a raised bog .
