This cross is located in the forest at Fontaine de Tavannes, where a French war cemetery was located. The steel cross is the remain of the grave of Jean Marie Sabot who died during the Battle of Verdun on 11 or 14 July 1916 in Bois de Chenois. Sabot was born on 8 July 1885 in Saint-Pal-de-Mons in the Haute-Loire department. During the battle he was assigned to the French 385th Infantry Regiment. After the war the bodies were reburied in other cemeteries, but Sabot's cross remained in the woods .
