Hunneschans, Uddel, Netherlands
Eastern entrance to the inner courtyard

The Hunneschans is an ancient earthwork fortification dating back to the early medieval period. It was a ring fort that was constructed around the 10th century to protect an important trade route. The name is not a reference to Huns but possibly to "Hūnen" or Saxons.

The Hunneschans is located near the village of Uddel, east of the Uddelermeer lake. This strategic location provided a natural defense mechanism, enhancing the fort's ability to repel invaders. The earthwork itself consists of a ring-shaped mound, encircled by a ditch. The ditch and earth walls were likely used to deter attackers and control access to the protected area inside. The almost round inner courtyard has a diameter of approximately 100 metres.
