At the start of the conflict, German forces fortified La Pierre Piquée, renaming it "Feste Schlangenburg" in honor of Second Lieutenant Schlange of the 70th Reserve Infantry Regiment, who was killed on 23 September 1914, during the capture of the summit . The fortifications included a double line of bunkers connected by a partially concrete circular trench.
