Feste Bleibtreu

Feste Bleibtreu is a German strongpoint from World War I in the French Vosges mountains. It was built by the Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon Esslingen and is located on the 641m high Le Pain de Sucre. The location offers a good overview over the valley and Col de la Chapelotte, the mountain where heavy fighting took place. The strongpoint is named after Major Bleibtreu who was commander of the German troops in this sector.

On 1 August 1916, the French troops attacked Feste Bleibtreu. The 3rd battalion of the 157th alpine infantry regiment forced their way over the steep slopes. The troops became entangled in barbed wire and came under heavy fire. The attack failed. At the foot of the mountain stands a monument commemorating the attack.
