Ermelo, Gelderland, Netherlands

The heathlands near Ermelo are a vast, open landscape shaped by centuries of grazing and human activity. Characterized by rolling heath, sandy soils, and scattered pine forests, the area is rich in archaeological history. Prehistoric burial mounds, dating back to the late Neolithic era, dot the landscape, marking ancient settlements. Additionally, remnants of a Roman marching camp have been discovered, providing evidence of temporary military occupation during the Roman Empire's expansion. The heathlands were historically maintained through sheep grazing, preventing forest regrowth and preserving the open terrain.
