Earl's Palace

Earl's Palace in Birsay, Orkney, Scotland, is a 16th-century ruin built by Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of Orkney and illegitimate son of King James V. The palace was constructed in the 1570s and was further extended in the 1580s. The palace was a two-story structure arranged around a central courtyard, with prominent towers at three of its corners. The ground floors were fortified with gun holes, indicating its dual purpose as both a residence and a stronghold. After the death of Robert Stewart, the palace was used only occasionally and gradually fell into disrepair. By the early 18th century, it was largely roofless and decaying.
