Dun Carloway (Dùn Chàrlabhaigh) is an exceptionally well-preserved Iron Age broch located on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. Built around the 1st century AD, this dry-stone tower is a prime example of the sophisticated engineering skills of the era. Brochs were multi-functional structures used for defense, habitation, and storage, often occupied by extended families or small communities.

Situated on a rocky hillside overlooking Loch Roag, Dun Carloway’s location offered strategic advantages. It provided a commanding view of the surrounding landscape and coast, helping its inhabitants monitor approaching threats. The structure itself is circular, with double walls containing an interior staircase that would have allowed access to multiple levels. At its peak, the broch likely stood around 9 meters tall, though today it reaches approximately 7 meters at its highest point.
