The Battle of Spicheren was fought on 6 August 1870. It was a significant engagement during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. The Prussians launched an aggressive assault on French positions atop the steep Spicheren Heights, overcoming challenging terrain and heavy resistance. Despite their strong defensive position, the French retreated under pressure, marking a critical Prussian victory that contributed to the larger collapse of French forces in the war.

Today, the battlefield is a site of historical remembrance, marked by numerous monuments and graves. Large and several smaller memorials dot the area, honoring specific regiments or individuals. Military cemeteries in and around Spicheren contain the graves of French and German soldiers.
