Abri Caverne de Souville

Abri Caverne de Souville is an underground shelter of Fort Souville. The shelter consists of two large galleries that lie 10 meters below ground. One gallery led to the courtyard of the fort, the other gallery led to the ammunition store of the fort. The abri served as shelter for the fort garrison against artillery fire.

In World War I, during the Battle of Verdun, the abri became crucial for the French defenders of Fort Souville to withstand the heavy German bombardments. The fort withstood the German attacks and remained in French hands. Today, Abri Caverne de Souville is a ruin and access is prohibited and dangerous.
